International Workshop:

Citizenship, Sovereignty and Soft Borders

11.03.2011 – 13.03.2011

On 11-13 March 2011 the Ludwig-Maximilians-University of Munich (Prof. Dr. Marie-Janine Calic) and the University of Hamburg (Prof. Dr. Thomas Bruha) held an international workshop on „Sovereignty, citizenship and soft borders in Southeast Europe“ at lake Starnberg.
The workshop addressed questions of sovereignty, borders, and citizenship in the Western Balkans in the context of the evolving ´Europeanization´ process. The aim of the conference was to analyze the potential problems in the region in detail, and to identify likely future scenarios as well as creative problem-solving strategies. In particular, the conference explored what alternatives may exist as regards “classical sovereignty”, for instance variants of sharing sovereignty, soft border regimes and supra- or transnational citizenship regimes. The event followed an initial workshop on „Kosovo/Kosova in the 20th century – exploring prospects for future international scientific cooperation" held in Berlin on 19-21 March 2010. The two workshops were supported by the Volkswagen Stiftung.
